Please take into account that these are my personal tasting notes and personal experience, as such you may interpret this whisky very differently from me.
This is the newest expression from The Lakes Distillery and is available for pre-order.
Orange, dried fruits, vanilla, custard, slight toffee, oak and nutmeg.
Spicy (pepper & clove) and bitter but mixed with light, sweet fruity notes – raisins, green grapes and maybe strawberry. Giving way to more creamy and sweet notes with a touch of vanilla. Those bitter notes still keep popping up though.
Nutty, fading spice, slight smoke and slight orange.
Lovely nose – nothing too complex but it did give me high hopes. I loved the sweet, fruity flavours and it was surprisingly light on the palate. I also enjoyed the nutty, slightly smoky finish which you don’t expect at all. However I found the bitter notes too much as it kept coming back and overpowering the sweet and fruity flavours which I felt brought this dram down.
Honest opinion? It’s alright but the bitterness stopped it being any better. It’s the same price as other expressions of The One at £39.95 and the fact it’s a limited edition has probably pushed the price to this point. I think it’s too high for what you get though, especially when a bottle of Compass Box Spice Tree which has a similar profile without the bitterness issue is only slightly more. It would be very interesting to taste these two side by side in fact.
As this is a new release and I got it on pre-order I’ve not seen any other reviews for it yet. I am however taking it to a whisky bloggers get together this Sunday so I’ll see what everyone else thinks of it.
Taken from the Lakes Distillery Website:
This is a very special expression of The ONE, and is a limited edition of only 3,740 bottles.
The finest aged whiskies from around the British Isles, sourced by our Master Distiller.
Whiskies of outstanding character are expertly blended to create a unique combination of flavours that reflect the passion, diversity and craftsmanship inherent across our island nations. These have then been married together before being put into Pedro Ximenez Sherry hogsheads, carefully crafted in Spain from European oak. These PX hogsheads have then been seasoned with sweet, dark sherry for a period of time, before being used to add a new layer of complexity to our unique whisky, The ONE.
Neat, or add a drop of water to release the subtle flavours and aromas of this outstanding whisky.
TASTING NOTES: Dried fruits with hints of fresh ginger, toffee, nutmeg and gentle smoke. The palate is smooth and creamy with notes of vanilla, sun-dried raisins, nutmeg and wood smoke.
