Please take into account that these are my personal tasting notes and personal experience, as such you may interpret this whiskey differently from me.
Near the end of 2017 I took part in series 2 of #BlindTasting set up my Brian of Malt Musings. It’s taken me a while to get around to typing up my tasting notes from then but I’m getting there at last. If you’ve not heard of the #BlindTasting’s then you can get the low-down HERE and you can also find out more detail about Series 2 HERE on Malt Musing’s website.
The third whisky of Series 2 came from Alistair (@SpiritAndWood). His first blind sample for series 2 was from The Lakes Distillery – The One: Pedro Ximenez Sherry Cask. My full tasting notes are below:
Vanilla, fudge and malt followed by honeysuckle and apple peel giving a slight tang.
Creamy – vanilla, fudge and honey. A touch of citrus and then bitter oak.
Malt, sweet fudge and again bitter oak.
I’ve tried this before… in fact I bought a whole bottle of it for £39.95 and have reviewed it already – you can read my original tasting notes HERE. Unfortunately I’m not the biggest fan of this expression – it’s full of potential but I found the bitter oak note on the palate and finish ruined it for me which is a big shame. It’s interesting that my original tasting notes were more in-depth, although I had spent more time with it when originally reviewing it. Yet both times the bitter oak note ruined it for me.
This is a very special expression of The ONE, and is a limited edition of only 3,740 bottles.
The finest aged whiskies from around the British Isles, sourced by our Master Distiller.
Whiskies of outstanding character are expertly blended to create a unique combination of flavours that reflect the passion, diversity and craftsmanship inherent across our island nations. These have then been married together before being put into Pedro Ximenez Sherry hogsheads, carefully crafted in Spain from European oak. These PX hogsheads have then been seasoned with sweet, dark sherry for a period of time, before being used to add a new layer of complexity to our unique whisky, The ONE.
Neat, or add a drop of water to release the subtle flavours and aromas of this outstanding whisky.
TASTING NOTES: Dried fruits with hints of fresh ginger, toffee, nutmeg and gentle smoke. The palate is smooth and creamy with notes of vanilla, sun-dried raisins, nutmeg and wood smoke.
